Meta Banned Me Before I Could Even Scroll: A Threads Story

That was me not that long ago,

Not a premonition exactly — more like the feeling you get when you know someone's reputation and decide to give them a chance anyway. Meta has earned its reputation. I know what they are. But there were some people and communities I wanted to connect with who weren't anywhere else I could easily reach, and I told myself: just try it. Worst case, you delete the account.

Spoiler: I didn't even get to delete it.

On February 8th, I tried Threads for the first time. I want to be precise about what I mean by "tried": I didn't really get to use it.

I connected through my Instagram account — a quiet, personal account. No posts. Just my wife as a follower. Not a suspicious profile. Not a new burner. An account that has existed, undisturbed, with zero violations. I completed every prompt Threads put in front of me during setup. I was using a browser — both desktop and mobile — not Meta's app, because I'd rather not hand their software direct access to my device if I don't have to. And then it locked me out for nearly an hour before I could do anything at all.

I hadn't scrolled. I hadn't followed anyone. I hadn't typed a single character. I had done exactly what Meta asked, in exactly the order they asked it, and the reward for that compliance was an immediate lockout.

That's where this story starts — not with something I did wrong, but with a platform that treats new users as suspects by default, then moves the goalposts on what "proven innocent" means.

Eleven Days of Normal

After the first-day lockout cleared, I used Threads the way any ordinary person would. I followed some accounts and topics I was interested in. I read. I liked a few posts, boosted some things I found worthwhile. I made a couple of posts of my own, including links back to this blog. Nothing aggressive. Nothing automated. No bulk-following, no spam, no harassment. Just using a social media app.

I want to be upfront about why I was there at all. I run my own Mastodon instance — hosted through masto.host, so I don't have to deal with the infrastructure side, but it's my instance, I'm the admin, and it's mine in every way that matters. The fediverse is my home on the social web — I believe in it, I trust it with my digital life. I'm not a Meta fan; I never have been. But I also try not to let that bias stop me from giving things a fair shot. There are people I wanted to connect with who aren't on the open web yet, some communities that exist on Threads and nowhere else I could easily reach. So I gave it a chance. No grand agenda — just trying to meet people where they are.

And yes, I know. It's Meta. I can already hear it. But I'd rather give something a fair shot than assume the worst without trying. Assumption confirmed. Lesson learned.

For eleven days, nothing happened. Then on February 19th, mid-session, doing the same things I'd been doing all along — following people in my feed — Threads hit me with another demand: phone number and selfie. Again. As if I'd never verified at all. I had already given them both. I already had two-factor authentication enabled. None of that mattered.

And for what it's worth: one of the last things I had boosted before the lockout was a story from The Verge about the fediverse. Make of that what you will.

The Appeal That Wasn't

I complied again, submitted the verification again, and then appealed. The response was swift, vague, and final: my account "did not meet account integrity standards." No specifics. No examples. No evidence of anything I had actually done. No further appeal path. Just a door closing.

Then, for the finishing touch: I tried to download my data before leaving — which I'm legally entitled to under a number of data protection frameworks. Password rejected. Despite it being correctly stored in Vaultwarden. Meta had suspended my account and simultaneously locked me out of their data portability tool. My data, inaccessible, in a system I can no longer log into.

That phrase — "account integrity standards" — deserves some attention. It's designed to sound like you did something wrong. Like there's a file somewhere with your violations listed in it. There isn't. It's the language corporations use when an algorithm made a decision and no human is ever going to review it. It sounds final and authoritative while saying absolutely nothing.

This Is Not Unusual

If you think this sounds extreme, it isn't. It's routine.

Meta operates on a "remove first, ask questions later" model, where automated systems pull the trigger and human review is thin at best — appeals are often processed by bots or underresourced staff reading scripts, with wrongful suspensions sitting unresolved for weeks. One user described getting their account restored only after a friend who worked at Meta made an internal appeal, noting they had read multiple forums where people lost their accounts the exact same way. Another account was banned for 24 hours simply for commenting "congratulations" on someone's post, with no explanation of what rule was broken.

The linked-account structure makes it worse. Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads are all tied together. A flag on one platform can cascade across a user's entire identity — a domino effect of algorithmic guilt by association, with no humans in the loop to catch it.

By late 2025 and into 2026, platforms have been correlating multiple behavioral signals simultaneously: device fingerprints, login patterns, IP changes, session behavior, activity rates. When these signals align in a way the system doesn't like, restrictions are applied automatically, often without any warning. The problem is that these systems can't reliably distinguish between a bot and a security-conscious human being who uses a password manager, accesses the platform through a browser instead of the app, and doesn't have years of behavioral history because they're new. Using a browser rather than the app is itself a flag — Meta collects significantly less device telemetry from browser sessions, which makes you look more anonymous, which their systems apparently interpret as more suspicious. Being careful with your privacy is, in Meta's model, evidence of bad intent.

Meta's own transparency documentation claims accounts are given opportunities to understand the rules and that notifications explain the nature of violations before serious action is taken. What actually happened to me was a lockout before I could scroll on day one, a repeat verification demand eleven days later during normal use, a final ban with no explanation, and a data download wall — all on an account that never posted anything objectionable.

There's no contradiction worth raising with Meta, by the way. There's no support line, no escalation path, no human who will look at any individual case. Threads support is, by Meta's own admission to affected users, beyond the scope of their general support channels. You're dealing with a system, not a company.

Why I'm Still on Instagram and Facebook (Sort Of)

I'll keep Instagram because my wife sends me videos. I pull local news and city updates from Facebook via RSS through rss.app into Tapestry — I'm not really "on" Facebook so much as extracting the one useful thing it has without handing it my attention directly. I'm using them as tools, on my own terms, for specific things they're actually useful for.

But that pragmatism is exactly what makes this story worth telling. I'm not someone who relies on Meta's platforms for community, income, or reach. I have a home on the internet — I pay to host it, I admin it, nobody can ban me from it. And even operating entirely on my own terms, with full 2FA enabled, with no history of violations, with a personal account that had one follower and zero posts — I was still treated as a threat before I could do anything at all.

That's not an edge case. That's the system working as designed. These platforms don't actually want users. They want data subjects who behave in predictable, monetizable patterns. Anyone who doesn't fit that mold — who uses a password manager, enables all the security features, doesn't immediately start posting content for the algorithm — gets flagged as an anomaly.

What This Means If You've Built Something Here

If you're a creator, a community organizer, a small business, or anyone who has invested time and audience into Meta's platforms: your audience doesn't belong to you. One opaque algorithmic decision and it's gone, with no recourse and no explanation. That's not a bug in their system. That's the architecture.

A petition with thousands of signatures demanding Meta restore wrongfully banned accounts went up in mid-2025. Meta acknowledged a "technical error" — but only for Facebook Groups, and only after the story got large enough to be embarrassing. For individual users who got caught in the same dragnet, there was silence.

The fediverse exists for a reason. My server is still running. If you want to find me somewhere that nobody can arbitrarily shut the door on either of us, you know where to look.
